Third entry:Oil palm Plantation

The visit to the Oil Palm was an unforgettable memory as the smell made most of us wanting to vomit. But without this trip to the oil palm, i would never have known that oil can be extracted from a fruit called palm fruit.
The palm fruit takes five to six months to mature from pollination to maturity. Each fruit is made up of the pericarp (outer layer) and the kernel (inner layer). Each fruit weighs about 40-50 kg when ready for harvesting. The fruit grows in large bunches and is reddish.
And i also realized that without the workers there who did not complain about the living conditions, there would not have been cooking oil for us to have a good meal. Due to the unbearable smell, we did not stay long but i really hope if there is another trip to the oil palm, i want to have a glance of the whole process.
We also visited the plantation and saw the process of harvesting. Although it was hot and smelly, i managed to learn more about it...

Characteristics:
Oil palms were introduced to Malaysia in 1910.Since then, oil palm has become a source of income for the government.Due to its tropical climate and large area for harvesting, oil palms has thrived in Malaysia. The agriculture type is plantation and the input is high while the total output is high but the output per unit area is low.Lots of pesticides are used to keep pest out as in a plantation, a common type of plant is planted such as oil palm and thus if a disease occurs in one of the plant, it will quickly spread to the others.Plantations require large amount of labour wihch are usually provided by low waged workers. There is usually a processing factory near the plantation(as shown in picture building with black smoke coming out) so that the plants can be processed quickly and sold. The prupose is commercial farming where crops are ggrown for sale. The amount of land used is large and a large amount of capital is needed into building roads, buying machinery and building factories to process the crops harvested from the plantations. They also invest on pesticides.

Second Entry:Layang Layang Museum

Kite Museum.

Different types of kite.

Have you ever wondered how kites were created? What makes them fly? I have found the answer at the Layang Layang Museum also known as pasir gudang kite museum. It is the first of its kind in Malaysia. It was built as an appreciation towards the contributions of Malaysia and international kite flyers. It has more than 200 kites and also a collection of ceramic vases.
I was attracted by the different unique designs of the kites. I wanted to touch them, but it was against the rules. However, there were many different types there and most of them are made from materials such as wood and stick.
I learnt that traditional kites are called Wau which originated from the sound that it makes. The kite has three parts which are the top, wing and tail. Wau is also the logo of the Malaysian airlines. Different countries have different types of kites.
For example, for Japan it is a face as they believe the face will scare the spirit and thus prevent them from attacking them. China kites mostly have a phoenix or dragon design to enhance their culture. There are a total of 10 different types of Wau. Some examples are Wau bulan, Wau merak and Wau jalabasdi. In conclusion, it is an interesting and captivating place for people of all ages and especially those who love kites.

First Entry:Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Museum

The Palace.

A trip to the Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Museum sure is interesting to me. It is the very first time i visited a royal Museum. The first thing that caught my eye was the grand furnitures that was preserved for a hundred over years.

Though there were many rules and regulations that we have to abide ,such as no touching of the items, we were still able to gain enough knowledge about the history of the Sultans of Johor.I learnt that from the past, people used hunting to determine how strong and powerful a person is.Many large animals such as tigers and rhinoceros were hunted by the sultans. Though the royal family no longer live there, they will still use this place for certain functions. There was also a very clear history of the Museum.

The thing that impressed me the most was the Kris which symbolizes a power of a family.A unique Kris symbolizes a powerful family. Anyone holding on to the Sultan's Kris can kill anyone he wants without the permission from the sultan. After 5 generations have passed, the preservation of the Royal museum and traditions still exist . This museum enables me to understand the long history of the sultans in Johor. It is a place to those that have went to will want to go again and to those who have not, its a MUST go place!

One can see various artefacts and art pieces owned by the Royal Family. There is also a gallery which features past and present rulers. There is also a room showing various animal head and body part that were hunted in the past. Many rooms feature silverware, crystal ware and many others priceless antiquities.
